Easily add CNAMEs to your domain to track your campaigns

In this article, we’ll explain how to add CNAME DNS records to your domain, in order to configure and optimize the tracking of your campaigns. DNS records are essential for linking your domain to external services, such as emailing or link tracking tools. In our example, we’ll see how to do this for Emelia, a cold emailing tool, and Switchy, a link shortener.

Here’s how to add the following DNS records:

Recording 1:

  • Type : CNAME
  • Host : link
  • Content: links.switchy.io

Recording 2:

  • Type : CNAME
  • Host : tracking
  • Content : emelia.email

How to add DNS records in just a few minutes :

Step 1: Log in to your domain management account.

Go to your domain provider’s website (e.g. OVH, GoDaddy, Gandi, etc.) and log in with your login details.

Step 2: Access DNS management

Once logged in, look for the “DNS Management” or “DNS Zone” section in your domain’s dashboard. Click on this section to access the list of DNS records for your domain.

Step 3: Add CNAME records

Now that you’re in the DNS zone, you’ll need to add two CNAME records. Here’s how it works:

a. For the first recording :

  • Click on “Add a record” or “Create a new entry”.
  • Select the “CNAME” record type.
  • In the “Host” field, enter “link”.
  • In the “Content” or “Target” field, enter “links.switchy.io”.
  • Save changes.

b. For the second recording :

  • Click again on “Add a record” or “Create a new entry”.
  • Select the “CNAME” record type.
  • In the “Host” field, enter “tracking”.
  • In the “Content” or “Target” field, enter “emelia.email”.
  • Save changes.

Step 4: Wait for DNS propagation

DNS changes can take some time to propagate, generally from a few minutes to 48 hours. During this period, the services associated with these CNAME records may not be immediately functional.
